Allergies And Pregnancy

Laura asks…
Has anyone developed food allergies during pregnancy?
I’m like 6 weeks pregnant and the other day i went to go eat a tuna sandwhich and my throat started to close up.
The thing is I doubt I could have developed an allergy in four months time.

TJHayes answers:
My best friend already had seafood allergies before she was pregnant, but when she conceived, they got worse. She ate something off a saucepan that a shellfish meal had been cooked in and she had to go to the hospital and get an injection to stop her throat from closing up.
Did you have to go to the hospital to get the injection to stop the allergy from closing your throat? If not, it may have been something else. Talk to a doctor about getting an allergy test when you go in for your first appt.
As you get older, you can develop new allergies or other allergies can get worse or even better. It may not be because you are pregnant. It is very possible that you could develop a food allergy in only a few months. It doesn’t take that long for your body to develop immunities or allergies.

Food Allergies And Weight Gain

Sandra asks…
how can I gain weight with my food allergies?
My brother is 23 yrs old he is 6’4 he weighs only 180 lbs. He went on a website that calculated that he needs to intake 4000 calories a day to get to a healthy weight. He has extreme food allergies that include:
no dairy including butter and yogurt and whey protien
no eggs
no nuts especially peanuts
no avocados
no melon
He doesn’t eat fast food at all. He has a high level of activity about 4 days a week he plays basketball and works out at a gym. He also has a high activity job in the sun. he says he feels weak at times he thought it was because he had stopped his activity and was out of shape. I totally think its because he needs FOOD! I need sugesstions on what are high calorie foods with out eating too much saturated fats and empty calories he can use to reach the 4000 calories a day.
Thanks

Hello,
What a great sibling you are! Besides the other good answer, I can recommend a peanut butter substitute: it’s SunButter, made from sunflower seeds in a totally nut-free facility. I blog for SunButter, so I can tell you it’s safe for people with nut allergies. Nutritionally, it’s similar to peanut butter, so it will help him get protein, calories and good fats. More info at sunbutter.com
Good luck!
